What it means
The EGR cooler bypass valve on bank 1 - routes EGR around the cooler during cold-start to keep cabin and engine warm-up fast - has an open control circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 1 EGR cooler bypass valve directs recirculated exhaust around the cooler when bypass is required, such as during warm-up. The control module monitors the valve's control circuit and sets P245A when it detects an open electrical path that prevents normal control of the bank 1 bypass valve.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in valve or wiring
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for other bank 1 EGR or actuator codes that may help identify whether the fault is isolated to the bypass circuit.
- Locate the bank 1 EGR cooler bypass valve and inspect its connector for a backed-out pin, corrosion, looseness, or heat damage.
- Trace the bypass-valve wiring toward the control module and look for breaks, chafing, or damage near hot exhaust parts.
- With power isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check circuit continuity between the bank 1 valve connector and the control module connector.
- If wiring and terminals are intact, test the bypass actuator and module control output using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or secure a loose bank 1 bypass-valve connector and terminal.
- Repair an open or damaged section of the bank 1 bypass-control wiring.
- Replace a faulty bank 1 EGR cooler bypass actuator after circuit checks confirm the fault.
- Repair a confirmed control-module connection or internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive gently if the engine runs normally, but avoid heavy load if it knocks or loses power. The bypass fault can affect warm-up and emissions control, so have it diagnosed soon.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
