What it means
Same as P245C on bank 2. EGR mixes inert exhaust into intake to lower combustion peak temperature — too little raises NOx, too much causes misfires and rough running.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 2 EGR cooler bypass valve directs exhaust gas around the cooler during some operating conditions, and its control circuit operates the valve. This code sets when the control signal is below the expected range, often because the control wire is shorted to ground or a connector has a poor connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control line shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check for related EGR faults and any live data showing the bank 2 bypass command or response.
- Inspect the bank 2 bypass valve connector and harness for chafing, corrosion, loose pins, or insulation contacting ground.
- Check the control wire for a short to ground using the wiring diagram and the vehicle's safe circuit-isolation procedure.
- Check connector terminal fit and wiring continuity between the valve and controller, moving the harness gently to expose intermittent contact.
- Compare control-circuit readings with the manufacturer's specifications and test the valve or controller only after wiring checks.
Common fixes
- Repair a bank 2 bypass control wire shorted to ground.
- Replace chafed or damaged wiring in the control circuit.
- Clean or replace corroded or loose connector terminals.
- Replace the bank 2 bypass valve or actuator if it fails circuit testing.
Can I keep driving?
The fault can affect EGR operation, causing reduced power, roughness, knocking under load, or higher emissions. Avoid hard acceleration if it runs poorly and arrange repair soon; stop if severe symptoms make driving unsafe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
