OBD-II fault code

P2341: Cylinder 6 Above Knock Threshold

What it means

Same condition as P2340 but on cylinder 6 — sustained knock above the threshold with retarded ignition correction.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine control module evaluates knock-sensor vibrations associated with cylinder 6 to identify abnormal combustion. P2341 sets when the cylinder 6 knock indication remains above its threshold, so ignition timing may be retarded for that cylinder; persistent knock or an electrical signal fault can cause the reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Abnormal combustion knock
  2. Knock sensor or wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Pinging or rattling under acceleration
  • Reduced power or sluggish acceleration

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and review cylinder 6 knock and ignition correction data to identify the load and temperature when the code set.
  2. Check for pinging during similar conditions and verify that the fuel meets the grade specified for the vehicle.
  3. Inspect the knock-sensor wiring and connectors relevant to cylinder 6's knock evaluation for damage, corrosion, moisture, or loose terminals.
  4. Check for overheating or other conditions that could create abnormal combustion at cylinder 6.
  5. If the knock reading stays high without matching engine noise, test the sensor circuit and investigate mechanical noise according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Use fuel of the grade specified for the vehicle if the current fuel is unsuitable.
  • Repair damaged, corroded, or wet knock-sensor wiring and connectors.
  • Correct an engine cooling issue that is contributing to knock.
  • Remove confirmed deposits or repair a confirmed mechanical noise source; replace the sensor only if testing confirms it has failed.

Can I keep driving?

Keep acceleration gentle and avoid sustained high load while cylinder 6 knock is detected, because timing may be reduced and continued knock can damage the engine. Stop if the noise becomes severe or the engine overheats.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
