OBD-II fault code

P233F: Fuel Pressure Regulator B Solenoid Supply Voltage Control Circuit High

What it means

Same as P233D but with the supply line shorted to a higher potential than expected, so the ECU measures more voltage on the regulator B feed than the commanded level allows.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Regulator B's solenoid supply circuit powers the actuator used to help control fuel rail pressure. The engine control module sets P233F when it detects voltage on that feed higher than expected, which can result from a short to another voltage source or a relay contact stuck closed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Supply line shorted to a higher voltage rail
  2. Supply relay contact welded closed
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare regulator B commands with its supply reading in live data to establish when the high voltage is present.
  2. Inspect the regulator B supply harness and connector for chafing, corrosion, heat damage, or contact with another powered wire.
  3. Check the regulator B supply relay, if fitted, for contacts that remain closed when they should not.
  4. With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check whether the supply wire is shorted to a higher-voltage circuit.
  5. If wiring and relay checks pass, test the regulator B solenoid and its control circuit to the manufacturer's specifications.

Common fixes

  • Repair supply wiring that is shorted to another voltage source.
  • Clean or repair corroded or damaged regulator B connector terminals.
  • Replace a relay with contacts confirmed to be stuck closed.
  • Replace the regulator B solenoid only if testing identifies it as faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Incorrect voltage on the regulator B feed can disrupt fuel pressure control and cause difficult starting, stalling, or power loss. Avoid heavy loads and stop if the engine stalls or cannot maintain power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
