What it means
The turbocharger turbine inlet valve is detected as stuck closed. This can prevent the intended control of exhaust flow through the turbine and affect boost response.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The turbine inlet valve directs exhaust gas to the relevant turbine in a sequential or two-stage turbo system. P22D3 sets when the module detects that this valve remains closed when it should open, restricting the commanded exhaust flow path. The result may be delayed boost or reduced engine power.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Valve seized closed
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced engine power or poor acceleration
- Possible abnormal boost response
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check available valve position and boost data to identify when the closed position was detected.
- Inspect the turbine inlet valve and its exhaust path for damage, obstruction, or a valve that is visibly unable to move.
- Check for carbon or debris holding the valve closed, following the manufacturer's inspection procedure.
- Inspect the actuator linkage, connector, and wiring for binding, corrosion, or damage that could stop valve movement.
- If the mechanism and wiring appear sound, test actuator command and position feedback according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clear carbon or debris preventing the turbine inlet valve from opening.
- Repair a binding or damaged actuator linkage.
- Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contact.
- Replace the turbine inlet valve if it remains stuck closed after cleaning and inspection.
Can I keep driving?
Use gentle throttle and avoid towing because restricted exhaust routing can delay boost and reduce power. Stop if the loss of power makes it unsafe to keep up with traffic.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
