OBD-II fault code

P22CF: Turbocharger Turbine Inlet Valve Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The drive circuit for the turbocharger turbine inlet valve is open. On sequential or two-stage charging the turbine inlet valve directs exhaust gas to the relevant turbine.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The turbine inlet valve control circuit operates a valve that directs exhaust gas to the relevant turbine in a sequential or two-stage turbo system. P22CF means the module has detected an open electrical path in that control circuit, so it may be unable to command the valve reliably. The code indicates a circuit fault; it does not by itself prove a turbo pressure problem.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid winding open
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced engine power or poor acceleration
  • Delayed or inconsistent boost response

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related turbo control codes to see when the turbine inlet valve command failed.
  2. Inspect the turbine inlet valve connector for a backed-out pin, corrosion, or a loose fit.
  3. Trace the control wiring for breaks, chafing, heat damage, or poor repairs, paying attention to areas near the turbo and exhaust.
  4. With the circuit isolated as directed by the manufacturer's procedure, check the valve solenoid winding for an open circuit.
  5. If the valve and harness pass their checks, test continuity through the circuit to the control module and inspect for an internal connection fault.

Common fixes

  • Seat a pushed-back connector pin and secure the turbine inlet valve connector.
  • Repair a broken or heat-damaged section of control wiring.
  • Replace the turbine inlet valve solenoid if its winding is open.
  • Repair a confirmed internal module connection fault using the manufacturer's repair procedure.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving to necessary trips and use gentle throttle because the valve may not direct exhaust flow correctly, causing delayed boost or reduced power. Avoid towing and stop if power loss makes it difficult to keep up with traffic.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
