What it means
The turbine inlet valve control circuit has a voltage above the expected range. This indicates an electrical circuit fault; the code alone does not establish a boost-pressure fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The turbine inlet valve control circuit operates the valve that routes exhaust gas to the relevant turbine in a sequential or two-stage turbo system. P22D1 sets when the module detects circuit voltage above its expected range, which can indicate a short to battery voltage or another wiring fault. It does not by itself confirm a boost-pressure problem.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to B+
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced engine power or poor acceleration
- Delayed or inconsistent boost response
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review available valve command and circuit feedback to establish when the high reading occurred.
- Inspect the turbine inlet valve harness for pinching, damaged insulation, or contact with a power source, especially near hot or moving parts.
- Check the valve connector for corrosion, loose terminals, or signs of heat damage.
- Use the manufacturer's wiring diagram and procedure to test for a short to battery voltage and inspect circuit connections.
- If the wiring is sound, test the valve solenoid and module control circuit according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring that is shorted to battery voltage or another power feed.
- Clean or repair loose, corroded, or heat-damaged connector terminals.
- Replace the turbine inlet valve solenoid if testing confirms an internal fault.
- Repair a confirmed module control fault using the manufacturer's procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid hard acceleration or towing because the valve may not control exhaust flow as intended, affecting boost response. Stop if power loss makes the vehicle unsafe to drive.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
