OBD-II fault code

P228B: Fuel Pressure Regulator B - Forced Engine Shutdown

What it means

The control module has commanded an engine shutdown because Fuel Pressure Regulator B exceeded its control limits. The code does not identify the underlying fault by itself.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Fuel Pressure Regulator B controls pressure in a separately monitored fuel-pressure circuit. P228B means the control module commanded an engine shutdown after Regulator B exceeded its control limits, but the code does not by itself identify why.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fuel-pressure regulator B stuck or responding incorrectly
  2. Fuel-pressure sensor or wiring fault
  3. Fuel pump fault causing pressure to exceed control limits
  4. Restricted fuel return or pressure-control path

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review commanded and measured fuel pressure for Regulator B around the shutdown.
  2. Inspect Regulator B's connector and wiring, and the associated pressure-sensor circuit, for loose contacts, corrosion, or damage.
  3. Check accessible fuel lines and the return or pressure-control path for kinks, crushing, leaks, or restriction.
  4. Use supported scan-tool tests to determine whether pressure in the Regulator B circuit responds to commands.
  5. If sensor readings and wiring are credible, test Regulator B and the pump or return path against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connections in the Regulator B or pressure-sensor circuit.
  • Clear a verified restriction in the fuel return or pressure-control path.
  • Replace Regulator B if it fails its operation test.
  • Repair or replace a confirmed faulty pump or pressure sensor.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine has shut down, stalls, or loses power, do not continue driving because it may stop again unexpectedly. Arrange diagnosis before relying on the vehicle.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
