What it means
Throttle/pedal position sensor D does not reach the calibrated maximum-stop value during the wide-open self-test. Sensor wear, mechanical stop misalignment, or a stuck pedal.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Throttle/pedal position sensor D supplies a position reading to the electronic throttle control system. During a wide-open self-test, the control module checks whether sensor D reaches its calibrated maximum; this code sets when its reading remains below that endpoint.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Throttle or pedal position sensor D worn or faulty
- Throttle or pedal mechanism not reaching its calibrated stop
- Binding throttle or pedal linkage
- Damaged wiring or connector
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
- Hesitation or surging
- Idle too high or too low
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live sensor D readings with the other position sensors as the pedal is moved slowly from rest to full travel.
- With the engine off, make sure the pedal and throttle mechanism are not obstructed or binding before reaching their intended maximum stop.
- Inspect sensor D's connector and wiring for corrosion, a pushed-back pin, loose fit, or chafing.
- Check sensor D's signal, reference, and ground circuits through the pedal's range for interruptions or a maximum value outside the manufacturer's specification.
- If the mechanism and harness are sound, test sensor D and the relevant assembly according to the manufacturer's procedure, then complete any required relearn.
Common fixes
- Remove an obstruction or repair binding that limits pedal or throttle travel.
- Repair poor connections or damaged wiring at sensor D.
- Replace a faulty sensor D or the throttle or pedal assembly if the sensor is integrated.
- Correct stop alignment and perform the specified relearn if required.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving to a minimum if throttle response is reduced or inconsistent, and avoid steep merges or overtaking. If acceleration becomes unpredictable, pull over safely because limited engine response can make traffic maneuvers unsafe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
