What it means
Throttle/pedal position sensor A does not reach the calibrated maximum-stop value during the wide-open self-test. Sensor wear, mechanical stop misalignment, or a stuck pedal.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Throttle/pedal position sensor A reports the position of the accelerator input or throttle, depending on the vehicle design. During a wide-open self-check, the control module expects sensor A to reach its calibrated maximum-stop value; P2163 sets when it does not, which can result from sensor wear, a binding mechanism, or a stop that is not reached.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Throttle or pedal position sensor A worn or faulty
- Throttle or pedal mechanism not reaching its calibrated stop
- Binding throttle or pedal linkage
- Damaged wiring or connector
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
- Hesitation or surging
- Idle too high or too low
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and scan-tool throttle or pedal position readings to confirm sensor A fails to reach its expected maximum during the monitored check.
- With the engine off, inspect the accelerator pedal or throttle mechanism for obstruction, binding, or failure to return and move freely.
- Inspect sensor A's connector and wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, or damage that could distort its position signal.
- Compare sensor A's reading through its full travel with other available position data and the manufacturer's specification.
- If the mechanism moves freely and wiring is sound, test sensor A and check mechanical stop alignment using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Remove debris or repair a binding pedal or throttle mechanism.
- Secure or repair a damaged sensor A connector or wiring.
- Replace throttle/pedal position sensor A if its signal fails the specified range test.
- Correct a misaligned mechanical stop according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Reduced throttle response or limp mode can make acceleration unpredictable, so avoid high-speed roads and overtaking if power is limited. If the pedal sticks or the engine does not respond predictably, pull over safely and do not continue driving.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
