What it means
Throttle/pedal position sensor C does not reach the calibrated maximum-stop value during the wide-open self-test. Sensor wear, mechanical stop misalignment, or a stuck pedal.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Throttle/pedal position sensor C is one of the position signals used by the electronic throttle system to track throttle or accelerator pedal travel. The control module checks sensor C at its calibrated maximum during a wide-open self-test; this code sets when that signal does not reach the expected endpoint.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Throttle or pedal position sensor C worn or faulty
- Throttle or pedal mechanism not reaching its calibrated stop
- Binding throttle or pedal linkage
- Damaged wiring or connector
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
- Hesitation or surging
- Idle too high or too low
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data, then compare live sensor C data with the other position signals while slowly moving the pedal to see whether C alone falls short at full travel.
- With the engine off, check the pedal and throttle mechanism for binding or an obstruction that keeps it from reaching its full-travel stop.
- Inspect the sensor C connector and harness for a backed-out pin, corrosion, chafing, or a loose connection.
- Measure sensor C's signal and its reference and ground circuits during pedal movement, checking for dropouts or an endpoint outside the manufacturer's specification.
- If travel and wiring check out, test sensor C and its assembly with the manufacturer's procedure and perform any specified relearn after repair.
Common fixes
- Clear debris or binding that limits full pedal or throttle travel.
- Repair the sensor C connector or damaged wiring.
- Replace the faulty throttle or pedal position sensor C, or its integrated assembly.
- Correct a misaligned stop or carry out the specified position relearn.
Can I keep driving?
A short trip may be possible if throttle response is steady, but avoid high-speed driving and situations requiring quick acceleration. Stop safely if response changes or becomes unpredictable, since the engine may limit power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
