What it means
The throttle motor responds, but its actual position does not track the commanded position within tolerance. Often a dirty throttle bore where the plate sticks, or a worn motor.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The throttle actuator motor moves the electronic throttle plate, while the control module compares commanded movement with position feedback. P2101 sets when the motor responds but the throttle does not follow the command within the expected range or performance limits.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Throttle bore coked, plate sticks
- Throttle motor worn
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
- Hesitation or surging
- Idle too high or too low
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review commanded throttle angle, actual throttle position, and related pedal or throttle codes to identify when tracking failed.
- With the engine off, inspect the throttle bore and plate for carbon buildup or anything that could prevent smooth movement; do not force the plate.
- Inspect the throttle-body connector and harness for loose connections, corrosion, or damage that could distort motor or position feedback.
- Use a scan tool to compare commanded and actual throttle movement through the manufacturer's approved test, watching for sticking or lag.
- If the bore and wiring are sound, test the actuator and position feedback against the manufacturer's specification and perform any required relearn after repair.
Common fixes
- Clean deposits from the throttle bore and plate using the vehicle maker's approved method.
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged throttle-body connector or harness.
- Replace a worn throttle actuator or throttle body if its movement fails the specified test.
- Perform the required throttle or idle relearn after cleaning or replacement.
Can I keep driving?
The control module may limit power, making acceleration unpredictable; avoid overtaking and high-speed driving until the cause is fixed. Continued sticking can worsen hesitation or cause stalling.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
