What it means
Throttle actuator B motor drive line stuck low — short to ground. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Throttle actuator B is the motor that moves a secondary throttle plate on engines fitted with two throttle bodies. The control module monitors the B motor drive line and sets P210C when that line is held at an abnormally low level, commonly because it is shorted to ground.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
- Hesitation or surging
- Idle too high or too low
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and check for related throttle actuator B codes that may help identify when the low circuit condition occurs.
- Inspect the B motor connector for moisture, corrosion, displaced pins, and damaged seals that could let the circuit contact ground.
- Trace the B drive wiring for rubbed-through insulation or pinched sections, especially near brackets and hot or moving parts.
- With the circuit isolated as directed by the wiring diagram, check for an unintended short to ground and test the wire for continuity.
- If the harness and connector are sound, test the B motor circuit and module driver using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Dry and reseal a moisture-affected B motor connector, or replace damaged terminals.
- Repair insulation damage where the throttle actuator B wire is shorting to ground.
- Replace corroded or loose connector terminals that prevent a reliable circuit connection.
- Replace a failed B motor or control driver only after circuit testing identifies it as the cause.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving in heavy traffic or where sudden loss of throttle response would be hazardous; the vehicle may enter reduced-power mode or idle unpredictably. Stop if response becomes erratic or the engine cannot maintain a safe idle.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
