OBD-II fault code

P20FF: Reductant Control Module Performance

What it means

The dedicated SCR/reductant control module reports an internal performance fault — failed self-tests, watchdog resets, or calibration mismatch. Frequently a forerunner of total module failure.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The reductant control module manages SCR functions such as DEF pumping and dosing, and checks its own software and internal operation. P20FF sets when the module reports an internal performance problem, such as a failed self-check or calibration issue, rather than a fault isolated to one pump or injector.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Internal module fault
  2. Calibration mismatch after software update
  3. Module software outdated, reflash may resolve

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and read all SCR and communication codes before clearing anything, since related faults can point to a power, network, or calibration issue.
  2. Check the reductant control module's power, ground, and connector condition for poor contact, corrosion, or damage.
  3. Review available module status and software or calibration information with a compatible scan tool to identify a reported self-test or configuration fault.
  4. Check for relevant manufacturer service information or software updates for the vehicle and module before replacing hardware.
  5. If power, ground, connectors, and calibration are correct, follow the manufacturer's internal module diagnostic procedure to confirm failure.

Common fixes

  • Repair poor power, ground, or connector connections at the reductant control module.
  • Update or restore the correct module calibration using the manufacturer's approved process when indicated.
  • Replace the reductant control module if its internal fault is confirmed and cannot be corrected by calibration.

Can I keep driving?

Driving may remain possible, but SCR control can be unreliable and emissions warnings or a no-start countdown may develop. Avoid unnecessary driving and heed any countdown or reduced-operation warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
