What it means
The first DEF metering unit (the integrated module that combines pump, filter, level sensor, and dosing valve) is electrically OK but does not deliver the expected pressure or flow during operation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Reductant metering unit 1 combines components that supply and meter DEF for the SCR system. The control module monitors whether this first unit delivers the expected pressure or flow; P20FE sets when delivery falls outside the expected operating range despite an electrically functioning unit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Metering unit partially clogged or worn
- Restricted reductant line or filter
- Weak pump or dosing valve within the unit
- Faulty pressure or flow sensor
Symptoms
- Check engine light or NOx warning on
- AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
- Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review metering unit 1 command alongside available reductant pressure and flow readings to see how delivery differs from expectation.
- Inspect unit 1, its filter, and connected lines for leaks, kinks, restrictions, or DEF crystallization.
- Check the unit 1 electrical connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, or damage that could affect its sensor or pump signals.
- Use supported scan-tool tests to command unit 1 and observe whether pressure or flow rises and holds as expected.
- If delivery remains low or unstable, test the unit's pump, dosing valve, filter, and pressure or flow sensor using the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
Common fixes
- Clear an accessible restricted line or filter serving metering unit 1, following the manufacturer's service method.
- Repair leaks or damaged reductant lines and connectors associated with unit 1.
- Replace a faulty pressure or flow sensor in unit 1 if testing identifies it.
- Replace metering unit 1 if its pump or dosing components fail the prescribed performance test.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving because inadequate DEF delivery can raise NOx emissions and may lead to a warning countdown or reduced operation. Follow any displayed countdown and arrange repair promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
