OBD-II fault code

P20F8: Intake Manifold Runner Control Circuit Performance (Bank 1)

What it means

The IMRC actuator drive circuit on bank 1 is electrically OK but its current draw or duty-cycle response is outside the calibrated profile — typically a high-resistance solenoid winding or a partially shorted driver.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The bank 1 intake manifold runner control (IMRC) changes the intake passages to support engine breathing under different operating conditions. The control module monitors the actuator circuit's electrical response; P20F8 sets when its current draw or duty-cycle response falls outside the expected profile even though the circuit is not detected as simply open or shorted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. High-resistance or partially shorted actuator solenoid
  2. Sticking intake manifold runner mechanism
  3. Damaged wiring or poor connector contact
  4. Faulty actuator driver or control module

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Reduced power or sluggish acceleration
  • Rough idle or hesitation
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare bank 1 IMRC command with available live position or actuator data to identify when the response goes out of range.
  2. Inspect the bank 1 actuator connector and harness for loose contacts, corrosion, chafing, or heat damage.
  3. With the engine off and following the manufacturer's procedure, check whether the bank 1 runner linkage moves freely or binds.
  4. Measure the bank 1 actuator winding and circuit response using the manufacturer's test procedure and specification, then compare with bank 2 if the design allows.
  5. If the actuator and wiring pass, check the IMRC driver and control module operation according to manufacturer diagnostics.

Common fixes

  • Repair poor connections or damaged wiring in the bank 1 IMRC circuit.
  • Clean or free a sticking bank 1 runner mechanism if serviceable.
  • Replace the bank 1 IMRC actuator if its winding or response fails testing.
  • Repair or replace the actuator driver or control module only after circuit and actuator faults are ruled out.

Can I keep driving?

You can generally drive gently if the engine runs smoothly, but reduced power, hesitation, or rough idle may make merging and passing less predictable. Avoid hard acceleration and address it soon, since poor intake control can worsen drivability and fuel use.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
