OBD-II fault code

P2011: Intake Manifold Runner Control Circuit/Open (Bank 2)

What it means

The IMRC actuator drive circuit on bank 2 is open or has lost continuity — control module no longer detects a closing path through the actuator winding.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The intake manifold runner control actuator on bank 2 moves runner flaps to change airflow through that bank's intake. The control module monitors the actuator drive path, and P2011 sets when that circuit is open or lacks continuity, so current cannot flow through the actuator as expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open wiring or chafed conductor in IMRC harness
  2. Connector corroded — high resistance contact
  3. Actuator solenoid winding open

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
  • Hesitation or uneven engine response

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related IMRC codes to establish when the bank 2 actuator circuit fault occurred.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 IMRC harness and connector for a broken or chafed wire, corrosion, loose pins, or a pin pushed out of place.
  3. Check continuity through the bank 2 actuator drive circuit and its connector terminals using the wiring diagram.
  4. Measure the actuator solenoid winding and compare it with the manufacturer's specification to check for an open winding.
  5. If the wiring and actuator pass, check the control module output using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean the bank 2 IMRC connector and repair damaged terminals.
  • Repair an open or chafed wire in the bank 2 actuator harness.
  • Replace the bank 2 IMRC solenoid if its winding is open.
  • Repair the control module circuit only if testing confirms it is not providing the expected drive.

Can I keep driving?

Gentle driving is generally possible if the engine runs smoothly, though sluggish acceleration or hesitation may occur because the bank 2 runners may not operate. Avoid demanding acceleration, and stop if the engine misfires or the warning light flashes.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
