OBD-II fault code

P2083: Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent (Bank 2 Sensor 1)

What it means

The EGT sensor at bank 2 sensor 1 signal jumps or drops out intermittently — typically a connector or chafed wire near the exhaust manifold heat zone.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 2 sensor 1 measures exhaust temperature before the catalyst on bank 2, providing information the control module uses to manage emissions-system operation. The module monitors the sensor signal for continuity and consistency. P2083 sets when the signal from this specific sensor jumps or drops out intermittently, often because its connector or heat-exposed harness loses contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector loose
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible intermittent reduced engine performance
  • Possible exhaust or emissions-system warning

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and graph bank 2 sensor 1 EGT to see whether the signal dropout relates to engine load or vibration.
  2. With the exhaust cool, inspect the bank 2 sensor 1 connector and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or heat damage.
  3. Check terminal fit and signal-wire continuity while gently moving the bank 2 harness to look for an intermittent open.
  4. Verify sensor power and ground, where applicable, against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit stays stable during the harness check, test bank 2 sensor 1 for intermittent output using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the bank 2 sensor 1 connector.
  • Clean or repair loose or corroded connector terminals.
  • Repair damaged wiring and secure the harness away from vibration and exhaust heat.
  • Replace bank 2 sensor 1 if it intermittently fails with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

You may be able to drive gently if there is no performance loss, but avoid heavy load if a warning or power reduction appears. Arrange repair soon because the dropout can interfere with exhaust-system monitoring.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
