OBD-II fault code

P206E: Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Stuck Open (Bank 2)

What it means

Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Stuck Open (Bank 2): the control module has detected this fault condition.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The intake manifold tuning valve on bank 2 changes the intake path to help the engine breathe under different operating conditions. The control module checks whether the valve moves as commanded; P206E sets when the bank 2 valve remains in the open position when it should move.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Carbon buildup blocks flap travel
  2. Actuator seized
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible reduced engine power or acceleration
  • Possible hesitation or rough running

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live IMT command or position data, if available, to confirm the fault concerns bank 2 and note the conditions when the valve failed to move.
  2. Locate bank 2 using the vehicle’s service information, then inspect its IMT actuator, linkage, and connector for damage, looseness, or disconnection.
  3. Check the bank 2 valve and linkage for carbon or debris that physically prevents the flap from closing.
  4. Command the bank 2 IMT valve with a scan tool, if supported, and observe whether the actuator and position feedback respond.
  5. Test the bank 2 actuator wiring and actuator operation using the manufacturer’s procedure before deciding whether the valve or actuator has failed.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose bank 2 IMT actuator connector.
  • Remove carbon or debris that is obstructing the bank 2 flap, using the vehicle maker’s service procedure.
  • Repair or replace a damaged bank 2 actuator linkage.
  • Replace a seized bank 2 actuator or valve assembly if it cannot move freely after obstruction and circuit checks.

Can I keep driving?

Short local trips may be possible if the engine runs smoothly, but reduced power or hesitation can make merging and overtaking less predictable. Avoid hard acceleration and stop driving if the engine runs severely rough or loses power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
