What it means
The BMS detects deterioration in HV battery pack section B. Capacity or internal resistance outside service limits.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery management system monitors the high-voltage battery in sections, and this code identifies section B. It evaluates section B's capacity, internal resistance, and balance against service limits. P0EDF is set when those measurements indicate that section B has deteriorated enough to affect battery performance.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Cells aged - capacity reduced
- Internal resistance increased
- Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and retrieve section B capacity, resistance, and cell-balance readings using a scan tool that can access the battery management system.
- Compare section B measurements with neighboring sections during similar charge and load conditions to confirm whether B is the outlier.
- Inspect battery cooling airflow and accessible section B sensing connectors for blockage, damage, or poor contact, observing the vehicle's high-voltage safety procedure.
- Check section B temperature and sensor data for irregular readings that might mimic a battery condition problem.
- Follow the manufacturer's battery test procedure to confirm cell degradation or imbalance before authorizing pack repair.
Common fixes
- Correct a blocked battery cooling path affecting section B.
- Repair a loose or damaged section B sensing connector or harness.
- Replace a confirmed faulty battery sensor or control component.
- Repair or replace the battery section or pack if testing confirms capacity loss or excessive resistance.
Can I keep driving?
With reduced power or limp operation, avoid fast traffic, steep climbs, and long trips where a sudden power limit could be hazardous. Charging may be slow or unavailable; stop safely if power loss becomes severe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
