What it means
Phase V current of the a/c compressor motor reports a current high condition. Phase commutation may be impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The electric A/C compressor motor uses phase V to produce rotation, and its control module tracks the current flowing through that winding. P0D7D sets when phase V current is higher than expected, which can occur if motor phases are shorted or the compressor rotor is stalled.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short between motor phases
- Rotor stalled - high stall current
Symptoms
- Hybrid/EV system warning light on
- Air conditioning may be reduced or unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and live compressor phase-current values to see whether the high reading coincides with a compressor command or operating event.
- Check for other compressor, inverter, or high-voltage codes that may indicate a broader motor-drive fault.
- With the vehicle safely powered down using the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the compressor connector and phase wiring for melted insulation, damaged terminals, or contact between conductors.
- Have a qualified technician test for shorts between compressor motor phases using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the wiring is intact, check whether the compressor rotor is mechanically stalled and verify current-sensor readings against the manufacturer's diagnostic information.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged wiring or terminals that allow phase conductors to contact.
- Secure a loose compressor connector and clear the code after checking operation.
- Replace the compressor if testing confirms a short between its motor phases or a seized rotor.
- Repair or replace a confirmed faulty current-sensing or motor-drive component.
Can I keep driving?
The A/C may stop working, and the hybrid/EV system may limit operation to protect the compressor drive. Avoid repeated attempts to run the A/C; arrange prompt diagnosis of the high-voltage system.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
