OBD-II fault code

P0D7C: A/C Compressor Motor Phase V Current Low

What it means

Phase V current of the a/c compressor motor reports a current low condition. Phase commutation may be impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The electric A/C compressor uses a motor with separate phase windings, including phase V, to turn the compressor. The control module monitors current in that phase and sets P0D7C when it detects less current than expected, which can disrupt motor commutation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Phase winding partially open
  2. Current sensor offset drifted

Symptoms

  • Hybrid/EV system warning light on
  • Air conditioning may be reduced or unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare phase-current readings and compressor commands when the fault is present.
  2. With the vehicle safely powered down according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the compressor connector and phase V wiring for looseness, damage, corrosion, or signs of overheating.
  3. Check for related compressor or high-voltage system codes that could explain why phase V current is low.
  4. Have a qualified technician test phase V winding continuity and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the winding and wiring are sound, check the phase-current sensor reading for offset or drift using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure a loose compressor connector.
  • Repair damaged phase V wiring or terminals.
  • Replace a compressor with a confirmed partially open phase V winding.
  • Repair or replace the current-sensing component if testing confirms offset drift.

Can I keep driving?

Air conditioning may be reduced or unavailable, and the hybrid/EV system may limit operation. Avoid relying on cabin cooling in hot conditions; have the high-voltage compressor circuit checked promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
