OBD-II fault code

P0D4A: Battery Charger 14 Volt Output Current Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The ECM detects a high fault on the battery charger 14 volt output current sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery charger’s 14-volt output current sensor reports how much current is flowing on that output to the control module. This code sets when the sensor circuit reads higher than the module can accept, so the reading cannot be trusted for charger control.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check charger status and the 14-volt output current reading to see when the fault occurs.
  2. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect the 14-volt current sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or a signal wire touching battery positive.
  3. Check the connector pins for corrosion or poor contact that could raise resistance, and confirm the connector is fully seated.
  4. Test the sensor signal circuit for a short to battery positive and check continuity through the wiring using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Compare the sensor output with the manufacturer's specification and replace the sensor only if its circuit and connections test correctly.

Common fixes

  • Clean or repair corroded connector pins and secure the connector.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to battery positive or damaged wiring.
  • Replace the 14-volt output current sensor if it fails the specified test.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may be delayed, interrupted, or unavailable, so do not rely on the vehicle being ready for a planned trip until charging is confirmed. If the warning is accompanied by reduced propulsion power, stop somewhere safe and follow the vehicle’s instructions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
