OBD-II fault code

P0D14: Battery Charging System Negative Contactor A Control Circuit High

What it means

The control circuit for negative contactor A in the battery charging system is above its expected electrical range. The fault can prevent reliable contactor control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Negative contactor A's control circuit carries the command for a high-voltage switch in the battery charging system. P0D14 sets when the module detects a signal above the expected range, which can result from a wire shorted to battery positive, an open coil, or poor terminal contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wire shorted to B+
  2. Open coil
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Charging system warning light may come on
  • Charging may not start or may stop unexpectedly
  • Reduced electric driving range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related codes, noting the commanded state of negative contactor A when the high signal was detected.
  2. Inspect accessible wiring and connector pins for damage, corrosion, or contact with a battery-positive feed.
  3. With the manufacturer's wiring diagram, test for a short to positive in the negative contactor A control circuit.
  4. Check coil continuity and circuit response under the manufacturer's test conditions, since an open coil can produce a high reading.
  5. If the circuit and coil pass, compare module output and feedback to check for a driver or monitoring fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair wiring shorted to battery positive in the negative contactor A control circuit.
  • Restore secure connector contact or replace corroded terminals.
  • Replace negative contactor A if its coil is open.
  • Repair a module driver or monitoring fault only after the wiring and coil test correctly.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may not start or may stop unexpectedly, and electric range may drop if the battery cannot charge. Do not handle high-voltage components; arrange diagnosis promptly if the vehicle also limits high-voltage operation.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
