What it means
The control pilot charging ventilation switch reports a stuck off condition. The on-board charger negotiates voltage, current and safety with the EVSE; a fault interrupts charging or limits it to AC slow-charge despite a DC fast charger being attached.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The control pilot charging ventilation switch reports its status to the charging system while the vehicle negotiates a charge with the EVSE. P0D05 sets when the module sees the switch held in the off state when it expects an on indication, which can prevent charging or limit the available charging mode.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Charging ventilation switch stuck in the off position
- Switch or switch circuit fault
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and monitor the ventilation-switch status with a scan tool during a charge attempt to confirm that it remains off.
- Inspect the switch and its connector for a loose plug, damaged latch, corrosion, or wiring damage.
- Check whether the switch moves freely and is not physically held in the off position.
- Test the switch circuit and its connections against the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the switch or wiring is preventing an on signal.
- If the switch circuit tests correctly, check charging-system data for related faults that could affect the reported switch state.
Common fixes
- Reseat a loose switch connector or repair a damaged terminal.
- Repair an open or damaged section of switch-circuit wiring.
- Free a mechanically obstructed switch if it is being held off.
- Replace the ventilation switch if it fails to change state according to the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may not start or may be limited to a slower mode, so confirm that the vehicle can charge before depending on it for a trip. Do not assume a DC fast charger will overcome this fault.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
