OBD-II fault code

P0D04: Control Pilot Charging Ventilation Switch Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The control module detected an intermittent or erratic signal in the control pilot charging ventilation switch circuit. This may interfere with charging or the ventilation status reported to the charging system.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The control pilot charging ventilation switch provides a status signal used by the charging system during a charge session. The control module monitors that switch circuit and sets P0D04 when its signal changes erratically or drops in and out instead of remaining consistent.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and watch the control pilot ventilation-switch status during a charge attempt to see when it becomes erratic.
  2. Check that the charging connector and related switch connectors are fully seated, since a loose connection can interrupt the signal.
  3. Inspect the switch circuit wiring and connector pins for looseness, corrosion, damage, or signs of movement under vibration.
  4. Check the circuit ground for a loose or noisy connection that could make the switch reading unstable.
  5. If the wiring and ground are sound, test the switch signal while gently moving the harness and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reseat a loose connector at the charging ventilation switch or related charging-system connection.
  • Repair damaged wiring or terminals that lose contact with movement.
  • Clean and secure a poor ground connection.
  • Replace a switch that produces an intermittent signal when its wiring and ground are sound.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may fail to start or may interrupt, so avoid relying on the vehicle until a charge session completes reliably. A fault indicator or reduced charge rate may persist.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
