What it means
The ECM detects a intermittent/erratic fault on the hybrid/ev electronics coolant temperature sensor a circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Hybrid/EV electronics coolant temperature sensor A monitors coolant temperature for high-voltage electronics cooling. The ECM sets this code when the sensor A signal changes erratically or intermittently instead of remaining within a credible range, so cooling control may lose a dependable temperature reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor connector not seated
- Noisy ground reference
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Hybrid or EV system warning light on
- Reduced power or limited vehicle operation
- Cooling-system warning may appear
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live sensor A temperature for sudden jumps or dropouts, noting when the warning occurred.
- With the vehicle powered down as directed by its service information, check that sensor A's connector is fully seated and its lock is intact.
- Inspect sensor A wiring and connector pins for looseness, corrosion, or damage that could interrupt contact under vibration.
- Check the sensor A ground reference and signal circuit for unstable connections while monitoring the scan-tool reading.
- Test the sensor and circuit against the manufacturer's specification to isolate an intermittent sensor, ground, or harness fault.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the sensor A connector.
- Clean or repair loose or corroded connector terminals and restore a solid ground reference.
- Repair damaged sensor A wiring that loses contact with vibration.
- Replace sensor A if its output remains erratic with sound wiring and connections.
Can I keep driving?
If the warning is accompanied by reduced power or a cooling-system alert, stop somewhere safe and have the fault checked; an intermittent reading can cause the vehicle to limit operation unpredictably. Avoid long trips or heavy load because the ECM may intermittently lose temperature feedback for the high-voltage electronics.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
