What it means
The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the hybrid/ev electronics coolant temperature sensor a circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Electronics coolant temperature sensor A reports coolant temperature in the hybrid or EV power electronics loop. P0CEF sets when its signal is electrically plausible but falls outside the expected range or does not respond as expected, so the ECM cannot reliably use it to judge cooling.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor mounting displaced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Hybrid or EV system warning light on
- Reduced power or limited vehicle operation
- Cooling-system warning may appear
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and graph sensor A's temperature reading on a scan tool to check for implausible values or a response that does not track operating conditions.
- With the vehicle powered down under the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, confirm sensor A is mounted and seated correctly in its specified position.
- Inspect the sensor A connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or a connection that could skew the reading.
- Compare sensor A's reading with an independent temperature check or other available coolant temperature data, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- Test sensor A's response across its operating range against the manufacturer's specifications to distinguish sensor drift from a mounting or circuit problem.
Common fixes
- Correct sensor A's mounting or seating if it has shifted.
- Clean and secure a poor sensor connector or repair damaged wiring.
- Replace sensor A if its response has drifted outside the manufacturer's specified range.
- Correct a related cooling or installation condition identified during testing.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid sustained high loads if a cooling warning or reduced power appears, because the ECM may not recognize electronics coolant temperature correctly and could limit operation late or unnecessarily. Stop safely if the warning persists or power is restricted.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
