What it means
The generator inverter voltage is above the expected limit. The cause depends on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The generator inverter controls electrical power exchanged with the hybrid generator, including power sent to the high-voltage system. The control module sets P0C7B when generator inverter voltage rises above its calibrated limit, which can happen during regenerative energy flow or if battery-management voltage regulation is outside its expected range.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Regenerative braking overshoot
- BMS regulation outside calibration
Symptoms
- Hybrid or EV system warning light on
- Reduced power or limited vehicle operation
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and hybrid-system codes to see whether generator inverter voltage became high during regeneration or another power-flow event.
- Check live generator inverter voltage data against the manufacturer’s specification and note whether the fault is brief or persistent.
- Review battery-management and regenerative-braking data for related voltage-control faults.
- Inspect accessible generator inverter connectors and wiring for damage or poor connections, following the vehicle’s high-voltage safety procedure.
- Have the generator inverter and its voltage-control system tested to the manufacturer’s procedure if the live data confirms the fault.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged or loose wiring or connections serving the generator inverter.
- Correct a confirmed regenerative-braking control fault affecting generator inverter voltage.
- Repair or replace a battery-management component confirmed to be regulating voltage incorrectly.
- Repair or replace the generator inverter if testing identifies it as the source of the overvoltage.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving to a minimum if power is limited, and avoid demanding acceleration or strong regenerative braking. The vehicle may further restrict operation or shut down; stop safely if a high-voltage warning or loss of propulsion occurs.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
