What it means
The generator position sensor A circuit signal is below the expected level. This indicates a low signal in that circuit; the cause depends on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The generator position sensor's A circuit carries rotor-position information to the hybrid or electric drive control system. P0C66 sets when the circuit A signal falls below the expected electrical level, which can result from a short to ground, an internally shorted sensor, or resistive corrosion at the connector.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Hybrid or EV system warning light on
- Reduced power or limited vehicle operation
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame and live data for circuit A and note whether the low reading coincides with a hybrid warning or reduced-power event.
- Inspect the circuit A connector and harness for corrosion, water intrusion, chafing, or a wire contacting ground, following the manufacturer's high-voltage and power-down precautions.
- Use the wiring diagram to check circuit A supply and ground integrity, then measure its signal as specified by the manufacturer to confirm the low condition.
- With power isolated as required, test circuit A for a short to ground and check connector terminals for excessive resistance or poor contact.
- If the wiring and terminals pass, test the sensor itself against the manufacturer's specification for an internal short.
Common fixes
- Clean or replace corroded circuit A connector terminals and restore a sound connection.
- Repair circuit A wiring shorted to ground.
- Replace the generator position sensor if it is internally shorted.
- Clear the code and confirm circuit A signal returns to the specified range under the original operating conditions.
Can I keep driving?
Reduced power or limited operation is possible, so avoid high-speed roads, steep grades, and trips that depend on full power. If power drops or a hybrid/EV warning appears, pull over safely; continued driving may worsen the loss of drive capability.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
