OBD-II fault code

P0C6A: Generator Position Sensor Circuit B Range/Performance

What it means

The control module checks whether the generator position sensor circuit B signal is within the expected range and responds as expected. It sets this code when the signal is implausible or its performance is outside calibration.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Generator position sensors provide rotor-position information used to control generator and motor operation. P0C6A concerns circuit B: its signal is present but the module judges its range or response implausible, such as from a mechanically offset sensor, electrical noise, or a sensor drifting outside calibration.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor mechanically offset
  2. Electrical noise on signal line
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame and live data for circuit B to identify the operating conditions and whether its reported position is erratic or out of step with related position data.
  2. Inspect the circuit B sensor mounting and nearby components for looseness, damage, contamination, or signs that the sensor has shifted from its intended position.
  3. Inspect circuit B wiring, connector seating, shielding, and grounds for damage or poor contact that could introduce signal noise.
  4. With the manufacturer's wiring information, check circuit B supply, ground, and signal behavior while operating the system as specified, and compare the readings with manufacturer limits.
  5. If wiring and mounting are sound, test the circuit B sensor's output and alignment using the manufacturer's procedure to determine whether it has aged or moved outside calibration.

Common fixes

  • Secure the circuit B sensor and correct its position if the manufacturer permits adjustment.
  • Repair poor grounds, damaged shielding, or loose circuit B connections causing signal noise.
  • Repair or replace damaged circuit B wiring or connector terminals.
  • Replace the circuit B position sensor if its output remains outside the manufacturer's specification.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may enter limited operation if the module cannot trust circuit B position data. Avoid demanding acceleration or long trips until diagnosed, and stop safely if a hybrid or EV warning or reduced power occurs.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
