OBD-II fault code

P0C46: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Coolant Temperature Sensor A Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The hybrid/EV battery pack coolant temperature sensor A circuit signal is intermittent or erratic.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Battery-pack coolant temperature sensor A tells the hybrid or EV control system how warm the battery cooling circuit is. The module checks whether sensor A's signal changes consistently and plausibly; an erratic or intermittent signal sets P0C46 and can make battery temperature control unreliable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loose or poor sensor connector
  2. Intermittent wiring fault
  3. Faulty coolant temperature sensor

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live readings for battery coolant temperature sensor A for sudden jumps, dropouts, or values that do not match the battery's operating state.
  2. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect sensor A's connector for looseness, corrosion, moisture, or damaged and displaced pins.
  3. Trace the accessible sensor A wiring for chafing, pinching, or damage, especially where movement or vibration could make the fault intermittent.
  4. Check sensor A's signal and circuit continuity using the manufacturer's procedure, and see whether gently moving the harness makes the reading drop out.
  5. If wiring and connections are sound, test sensor A against the manufacturer's specification and replace it if its output remains erratic.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose sensor A connector.
  • Clean or repair corroded or damaged connector terminals.
  • Repair an intermittent open or damaged section of sensor A wiring.
  • Replace battery-pack coolant temperature sensor A if it fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration, sustained high loads, and charging if the warning is active, since the system may not be able to monitor battery cooling reliably. Stop if power is sharply limited or the vehicle reports a battery-temperature warning, and arrange diagnosis promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
