What it means
The total current draw of drive motor A reports a current high fault. Motor operation may be impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Drive Motor A is an electric traction motor, and its inverter controls power through the motor's three phase windings. The control module monitors total motor current and sets P0C01 when current is higher than expected, which can result from an overloaded motor or a short between phases.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Motor overload
- Short between motor phases
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live hybrid data for Drive Motor A current, torque request, speed, and temperature to identify when current rises above the expected range.
- Check for related inverter, motor, or cooling-system codes that could explain an abnormal load or current reading.
- With the vehicle safely powered down under its service procedure, visually inspect Drive Motor A's high-voltage connectors and harness for damage, contamination, or signs of overheating.
- Have a qualified technician check the motor phases for a short and assess motor or inverter condition using the manufacturer's high-voltage isolation and test procedures.
- Compare current-sensor readings and commanded motor output with the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a true overload from a sensing or inverter fault.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged or overheated motor or inverter connections.
- Correct a confirmed mechanical or operating condition that is overloading Drive Motor A.
- Repair or replace the motor or inverter component confirmed to have a phase short.
- Replace a current-sensing component only if testing confirms its reading is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid hard acceleration, towing, or steep climbs; the vehicle may reduce torque or shut down if Drive Motor A current remains excessive. Stop safely if power becomes unreliable or a hybrid-system warning escalates.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
