OBD-II fault code

P0BFF: Drive Motor A Current

What it means

The total current draw of drive motor A reports a current fault. Motor operation may be impaired. The drive motor's position, current and temperature are watched continuously; a fault here downgrades the inverter to a safe operating point or triggers torque reduction.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid or EV control system monitors drive motor A current so it can control motor torque and keep operation within safe limits. This code sets when the reported total current draw is outside the expected range or the current measurement has drifted, and the system may reduce torque to a safe operating level.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Calculated current outside expected range
  2. Current sensor drift

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review live motor A current alongside requested torque and operating conditions to determine when the reading goes out of range.
  2. Inspect the motor A current sensor connectors, wiring and grounds for looseness, corrosion or damage, following the manufacturer’s high-voltage safety procedure.
  3. Check the current sensor circuit and grounds against the manufacturer’s specification for poor connections or offset.
  4. Compare motor A current sensor readings with the manufacturer’s prescribed measurements under matching operating conditions to check for drift.
  5. If the circuit is sound, test the current sensor and control module input using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a loose or corroded motor A current sensor connection.
  • Repair damaged motor A current sensor wiring or ground connections.
  • Replace the motor A current sensor if its reading remains out of range after circuit checks.
  • Repair or replace the control module only if its input or current calculation is confirmed faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced torque or limp mode can make acceleration limited, and the vehicle may shut down if the fault worsens. Avoid driving if power delivery is unreliable; continued use can lead to loss of propulsion.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
