OBD-II fault code

P0AFE: Hybrid Battery System Voltage Too Low for Voltage Step Up Conversion

What it means

The control module detects hybrid battery system voltage too low for voltage step-up conversion.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid battery supplies high-voltage DC, and a voltage step-up converter raises that voltage for the electric drive system. P0AFE sets when the battery-system voltage is too low for the converter to perform that boost, which may result from a depleted pack, aged cells, or imbalance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. HV battery depleted
  2. Battery cells aged
  3. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and related battery and converter codes to see whether the low-voltage event occurred during heavy demand, low state of charge, or alongside another fault.
  2. Check live battery state of charge and pack voltage, then compare individual cell or block readings for weak or imbalanced sections.
  3. Confirm that the battery is being charged as intended and that the reported state of charge is plausible for the vehicle's recent use.
  4. Inspect accessible low-voltage battery-monitoring and converter connectors and harnesses for damage or poor connections, observing high-voltage safety procedures.
  5. Have pack voltage and cell balance assessed against the manufacturer's specifications, then check converter input and operation if the pack readings are within limits.

Common fixes

  • Restore charge using the vehicle's normal charging method if the pack is simply depleted.
  • Repair a verified battery-monitoring connector or low-voltage wiring fault.
  • Service or replace the battery pack if testing confirms aged or imbalanced cells outside service limits.
  • Repair or replace the step-up converter only if its input and operation tests identify a converter fault.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving because reduced power or limp mode can make merging and climbing hills difficult, and charging may be restricted. Stop in a safe place if power drops sharply, and do not access the high-voltage battery or converter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
