What it means
The control module detects that the hybrid battery pack temperature is below its expected operating range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The hybrid battery management system monitors pack temperature so it can limit charging and power when the cells are outside their operating range. P0AFD sets when the reported battery temperature is below the expected range, which can reflect genuinely cold conditions or an inaccurate sensor reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Very low ambient temperature
- Battery temperature sensing fault
- Battery heating system fault, if equipped
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and ambient temperature to determine whether the low pack reading occurred after a cold soak.
- Compare live readings from the battery temperature sensors with one another and with ambient temperature after the vehicle has sat, looking for a sensor that is implausibly colder.
- Inspect accessible temperature-sensor wiring and connectors for damage, moisture, or poor seating, following the vehicle's high-voltage safety procedures.
- Check the temperature-sensor circuits and readings against the wiring diagram and the manufacturer's specifications.
- If the pack is genuinely cold and the readings are credible, check whether the vehicle has a battery heating system and inspect its control, supply, and heater operation according to service information.
Common fixes
- Correct a loose, damaged, or corroded temperature-sensor connector or harness.
- Repair a sensor circuit fault identified by testing.
- Replace a battery temperature sensor if its readings fail the manufacturer's checks.
- Repair the battery heating system if fitted and confirmed faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Cold conditions can temporarily reduce electric range, charging speed, and available power; avoid demanding acceleration until the system warms and normal operation returns. If the warning or reduced power persists in milder conditions, arrange prompt diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
