OBD-II fault code

P0A9D: Hybrid/EV Battery Temperature Sensor A Circuit Low

What it means

The control module detects a low signal in the circuit for hybrid/EV battery temperature sensor A.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Battery temperature sensor A sends a signal that the control module uses to monitor one location in the hybrid or EV battery pack. This code sets when that signal is lower than the module's calibrated range, commonly because the signal wire is grounded or the sensor circuit has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Failed sensor
  3. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system warning light

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and read sensor A live data with other battery temperature readings to see whether its low signal is isolated.
  2. Inspect sensor A's accessible wiring and connector for a pinched or chafed signal wire, corrosion, or a poor connection.
  3. Check whether the sensor A reading responds plausibly to temperature changes or stays at a low limit.
  4. Following the manufacturer's safe procedure, test the signal circuit for a short to ground and inspect the sensor circuit connections.
  5. If the wiring is intact, test sensor A against the manufacturer's specification before replacing it.

Common fixes

  • Repair a sensor A signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Clean or repair a corroded, loose, or damaged connector.
  • Replace sensor A if it fails the manufacturer's test.
  • Repair a confirmed control-module circuit fault.

Can I keep driving?

Get the fault checked soon, since the module may not have a reliable temperature reading for that battery location and may limit hybrid operation. Avoid opening the battery pack or touching high-voltage wiring.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
