What it means
The control module detects that drive motor A inverter performance is outside its expected range. The code identifies a monitored performance problem; it does not by itself identify the failed component.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The inverter for drive motor A converts power between the high-voltage battery and motor A. The control module monitors its operation and sets P0A78 when the inverter’s performance falls outside the expected range; the code alone does not identify which inverter part has failed.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Inverter or power electronics fault
- Inverter cooling problem
- High-voltage connection or wiring fault
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan all hybrid system modules for related inverter, motor, temperature, and voltage codes to see when the drive motor A fault occurred.
- With the vehicle safely powered down according to its manufacturer’s instructions, inspect the drive motor A inverter’s accessible connectors and high-voltage wiring for damage, corrosion, looseness, or signs of overheating.
- Check the inverter cooling system for restricted airflow, coolant loss, leaks, or a fan that does not operate when commanded.
- Use a scan tool to compare drive motor A inverter temperatures and commanded versus reported operating values with other available motor and inverter data.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician test the drive motor A inverter and its high-voltage connections using the manufacturer’s procedures and specifications.
Common fixes
- Clear debris or restore airflow through the drive motor A inverter cooling path.
- Repair a damaged low-voltage connector or wiring in the inverter control circuit.
- Repair a leak or other fault in the inverter cooling system.
- Repair or replace the drive motor A inverter if testing confirms an internal power-electronics fault.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and long trips; reduced torque or limp mode can make merging and climbing hills difficult. If power drops sharply or the vehicle signals it may shut down, stop somewhere safe and arrange assistance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
