OBD-II fault code

P0A76: Generator Phase W Current Low

What it means

Generator phase W current is below the expected range. The code identifies a low-current condition but does not establish its cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid control module monitors generator phase W current while the inverter manages generator output. This code sets when measured phase W current falls below the expected range, which can be caused by a partially open phase W winding or a current-sensor offset that has drifted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Phase winding partially open
  2. Current sensor offset drifted

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced hybrid performance
  • Possible reduced-power mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare live generator phase W current with phases U and V during similar operating conditions.
  2. Check for related hybrid codes and determine whether phase W is consistently low or intermittently drops out.
  3. With high-voltage safety procedures followed, inspect phase W wiring and generator and inverter connectors for corrosion, loose terminals, or heat damage.
  4. Test the phase W current-sensor signal and wiring for an open, high resistance, or offset using the manufacturer's diagnostic information.
  5. If the sensor circuit checks out, have the generator phase W winding tested for a partial open against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged phase W wiring or a poor connector contact.
  • Repair an open or high-resistance section of the phase W circuit.
  • Replace the phase W current sensor if its offset is confirmed faulty.
  • Repair or replace the generator if testing confirms a partial phase W winding open.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy acceleration and towing because hybrid output may be reduced or limited. Arrange prompt diagnosis, and stop if propulsion becomes unreliable or the vehicle displays a stop warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
