OBD-II fault code

P0A74: Generator Phase V Current High

What it means

Generator phase V current is above the expected range. The code identifies a high-current condition but does not establish its cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid control system monitors generator phase V current as the inverter controls the generator. This code sets when phase V current exceeds the expected range; a short between phases or a stalled rotor can cause the excess current.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short between motor phases
  2. Rotor stalled - high stall current

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced hybrid performance
  • Possible reduced-power mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare live phase V current with phases U and W to see whether the high reading occurs continuously or under particular conditions.
  2. Check for related generator or inverter codes and note any reported rotor stall or reduced-power events.
  3. With high-voltage safety procedures followed, inspect phase V wiring and generator and inverter connectors for damaged insulation, cross-phase shorts, or heat damage.
  4. Have a qualified technician measure generator phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground insulation and winding condition against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the phase wiring and winding pass, check for a mechanically stalled generator rotor and compare phase current-sensor readings.

Common fixes

  • Repair shorted or heat-damaged phase V wiring and connector terminals.
  • Repair or replace a generator winding confirmed shorted between phases or to ground.
  • Correct a confirmed mechanical cause of generator rotor stall.
  • Repair the inverter if testing confirms its switching or current measurement circuitry is at fault.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive if the vehicle loses power, stalls, or displays a stop warning; the fault can cause reduced-power operation or shutdown. Keep clear of high-voltage components and arrange prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
