OBD-II fault code

P0A72: Generator Phase V Current

What it means

The control module detected a fault associated with generator phase V current. The code alone does not identify whether the cause is in the current measurement circuit, inverter, or generator.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid control module monitors generator phase V current through the inverter's current-measurement system. This code identifies a fault associated with the phase V reading, but does not determine whether the cause is the sensor, wiring, inverter, or generator.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Phase current sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced hybrid performance
  • Possible reduced-power mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare live generator phase V current with phases U and W to see whether the reading is absent, unstable, or out of balance.
  2. Check for related generator, inverter, or current-sensor codes and note whether reduced performance occurs at the same time.
  3. With high-voltage safety procedures followed, inspect the phase V harness and generator and inverter connectors for loose terminals, corrosion, chafing, or heat damage.
  4. Test the phase V current-sensor circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connections using the manufacturer's diagnostic information.
  5. If the sensor wiring is sound, have the inverter phase V output and generator phase V winding tested against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure or repair a loose, corroded, or damaged phase V connector.
  • Repair an open or short in the phase V current-sensor wiring.
  • Replace the phase V current sensor if testing confirms it has failed.
  • Repair or replace the inverter or generator only after tests identify an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and arrange prompt diagnosis because hybrid performance may be reduced or the vehicle may enter reduced-power mode. Stop if propulsion is affected or a warning directs you to stop, and do not handle high-voltage components.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
