OBD-II fault code

P0A39: Generator Temperature Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The generator temperature sensor circuit signal is above the expected range. The code identifies a high circuit signal; the specific cause depends on the vehicle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator temperature sensor reports heat to the hybrid control system so it can manage generator operation. P0A39 sets when the sensor circuit signal is above its expected range, commonly when the signal is shorted to B+, the sensor is open, or a connector has excessive contact resistance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced charging or hybrid performance
  • Possible reduced-power mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live generator temperature for a value fixed high or otherwise implausible compared with other temperature readings.
  2. With the vehicle safely powered down under the manufacturer's high-voltage procedure, inspect the generator sensor connector and harness for an open circuit, corrosion, or a wire touching a power feed.
  3. Using the wiring diagram, test the signal circuit for a short to B+ and check continuity through the sensor circuit as specified by the manufacturer.
  4. Test the generator temperature sensor and connector terminals against the manufacturer's specification to identify an open sensor or poor contact.
  5. Repair the confirmed fault, clear the code, and verify that generator temperature reports and changes plausibly.

Common fixes

  • Repair a generator sensor signal wire shorted to B+ or damaged harness.
  • Clean or repair corroded or loose generator sensor connector terminals.
  • Replace the generator temperature sensor if it is open or outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Restore any open circuit connection and verify hybrid charging and temperature readings.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid heavy electrical or propulsion loads because the hybrid system may reduce charging or power when it cannot trust generator temperature. Stop safely if reduced-power warnings appear or performance becomes unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
