OBD-II fault code

P0A38: Generator Temperature Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The generator temperature sensor circuit signal is below the expected range. The code identifies a low circuit signal; the specific cause depends on the vehicle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator temperature sensor sends a signal that allows the hybrid control system to monitor generator heat. P0A38 sets when that circuit signal is below its expected range, which can result from a signal short to ground, an internally shorted sensor, or poor connector contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system or check-engine warning light on
  • Possible reduced hybrid power

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to capture freeze-frame data and compare live generator temperature with other available readings for an implausibly low value.
  2. Power down the vehicle following the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, then inspect the generator sensor connector and harness for corrosion, damage, or wiring shorted against ground.
  3. Use the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure to check the generator sensor signal circuit for a short to ground and inspect the ground and connector terminals.
  4. Test the sensor and its terminals against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish an internal short from high contact resistance.
  5. Repair the confirmed fault, clear the code, and confirm the generator temperature signal is plausible and stable.

Common fixes

  • Repair generator temperature sensor wiring shorted to ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded or loose terminals at the generator sensor connector.
  • Replace the generator temperature sensor if it fails the manufacturer's test.
  • Restore the affected circuit connection and verify the scan-tool reading after clearing the code.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy loads because the hybrid system may reduce power when generator temperature cannot be trusted. If a reduced-power warning appears or the vehicle's behavior changes, stop safely; an actual generator overheating condition may not be reported accurately.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
