What it means
The generator temperature sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not perform as expected. The specific cause depends on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The generator temperature sensor measures generator heat so the hybrid control system can manage electrical output and protect the unit. P0A37 sets when the signal is present but its value or response does not match the expected range or behavior, including a sensor that has drifted or moved from its intended mounting position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor mounting displaced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Hybrid system or check-engine warning light on
- Possible reduced hybrid power
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live generator temperature data from startup through changing hybrid load; look for a value or response that is implausible rather than simply absent.
- With the vehicle made safe according to the manufacturer's high-voltage procedure, inspect the generator sensor mounting and connector for displacement, looseness, contamination, or damage.
- Check the sensor wiring and reference or ground connections for faults that could distort the reading.
- Test the generator temperature sensor and its response across the manufacturer's specified conditions and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.
- Correct the mounting, circuit, or sensor fault identified, then clear the code and confirm generator temperature tracks operating conditions plausibly.
Common fixes
- Secure the generator temperature sensor in its specified position if it has shifted.
- Repair poor connections or damaged wiring affecting the generator sensor signal.
- Replace a generator temperature sensor that has drifted outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Clear the code and verify the reading responds normally as generator load changes.
Can I keep driving?
Limit demanding acceleration and heavy loads until the generator temperature signal is trustworthy, since the hybrid system may reduce power to protect the generator. If a hybrid warning or reduced-power condition appears, stop safely if operation becomes unreliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
