OBD-II fault code

P0A27: Hybrid/EV Battery Power Off Circuit

What it means

The hybrid battery power-off control circuit reports a generic fault. Safe disconnection of the HV system cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid or electric vehicle's battery power-off circuit helps command safe disconnection of the high-voltage battery. The control system monitors whether that command path and associated contactor operation work as expected; this code sets when the power-off circuit reports a general fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Power-off wiring fault
  2. Main contactor fault
  3. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Read all high-voltage battery and contactor related codes and freeze-frame data to identify whether the power-off fault appears with a communication or pack condition.
  2. Check 12-volt supply and accessible low-voltage power-off circuit wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, or poor seating.
  3. Use a hybrid-capable scan tool to review contactor and power-off command status without attempting to access high-voltage components.
  4. Have the specified diagnostic procedure used to distinguish a power-off wiring issue from a contactor or battery pack condition.
  5. If low-voltage wiring checks pass, follow the manufacturer's high-voltage safety and test procedures to evaluate the contactor and pack status.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or poorly connected low-voltage power-off circuit wiring.
  • Correct a weak 12-volt supply or faulty control circuit connection.
  • Repair or replace a contactor if testing confirms it is not responding correctly.
  • Address a battery pack imbalance or related pack fault if indicated by the manufacturer's diagnosis.

Can I keep driving?

A fault in the battery power-off circuit can prevent reliable high-voltage isolation, so do not attempt high-voltage service or ignore the warning. If power is reduced or charging fails, limit use and arrange prompt diagnosis by a hybrid-qualified technician.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
