What it means
The high-voltage system interlock circuit signal is below the expected range. The code indicates a low circuit signal; the specific cause depends on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The high-voltage interlock loop signals whether its safety connectors and access points are closed. P0A0C means the interlock circuit signal is lower than the module expects, consistent with an open loop, poor terminal contact, or wiring damage pulling the signal down.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Interlock loop broken
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Hybrid system warning light on
- Vehicle may not enter READY mode
- Possible reduced or unavailable hybrid power
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and check for other hybrid codes that may explain whether the low signal appeared with a particular operating condition.
- Check live interlock status to confirm whether the module currently sees circuit continuity, without clearing the fault first.
- Inspect the service connector and accessible interlock connectors for a loose fit, corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-back terminals.
- Look for chafed or pinched interlock harness sections where they pass near body panels or brackets, without opening high-voltage enclosures.
- Have the interlock circuit checked for an open or excessive resistance using the manufacturer's isolation and testing procedure.
Common fixes
- Reseat a service connector or interlock plug that is not fully engaged.
- Repair a corroded or damaged connector terminal if approved by the vehicle's service information.
- Repair or replace a chafed interlock harness section.
- Replace a failed interlock component if testing confirms it is pulling the signal low.
Can I keep driving?
A low interlock signal can keep the vehicle out of READY or interrupt hybrid power, so avoid driving if propulsion is reduced or unpredictable. Do not inspect or repair high-voltage connections yourself.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
