OBD-II fault code

P094D: Hydraulic Pump Over Temperature

What it means

The hydraulic pump reports a over temperature condition. Pump operation is impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hydraulic pump generates transmission pressure and can heat up when it runs under sustained load. P094D sets when the pump’s temperature feedback indicates overheating, which can impair pump operation and lead the control module to limit transmission function.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sustained pump load
  2. Ambient temperature high

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review pump temperature and operating history in live data to see when the over-temperature condition occurred.
  2. Check whether the warning followed prolonged heavy shifting demand, towing, or operation in unusually hot ambient conditions.
  3. Inspect the pump and its area for restricted airflow, contamination, or other conditions that could keep heat from dissipating.
  4. Check transmission operation for signs of sustained pump demand, such as repeated delayed shifts or slipping that may keep the pump working hard.
  5. If the temperature reading seems implausible after cooling, check the temperature feedback circuit and sensor against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Allow the pump and transmission to cool, then reassess whether the temperature fault returns.
  • Correct operating conditions that create sustained pump load, such as an underlying shifting or pressure problem.
  • Clear debris or obstruction that restricts cooling around the pump.
  • Repair a faulty temperature feedback circuit or replace a confirmed failed sensing component.

Can I keep driving?

Stop and let the vehicle cool if the transmission warning appears with poor shifting, slipping, or limp mode; continued operation while overheated can damage the pump and transmission. Avoid towing or heavy loads until the cause is found.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
