What it means
The gear shift lock solenoid/actuator control circuit B reports a control circuit b low condition. Selector lever interlock cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Circuit B operates the gear-shift lock solenoid or actuator that helps prevent the selector leaving Park before release conditions are met. P092C sets when the module detects circuit B voltage lower than expected, commonly from a wire shorted to ground or an internally shorted coil.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to ground
- Internal short in coil
Symptoms
- Selector may not shift out of Park
- Shift-lock warning or check-engine light may illuminate
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check for related shift-lock or transmission codes before clearing the fault.
- Check whether the selector releases from Park when the brake is pressed, and note whether the fault returns during operation.
- Inspect circuit B wiring for insulation rubbed through to ground and check the connector for moisture, corrosion, or damaged terminals.
- With a scan tool, observe circuit B status while commanding the interlock, if that function is available.
- Test circuit B for a short to ground and check the actuator coil, following the manufacturer's specification.
- If the short is not present at rest, isolate sections of the circuit to locate an intermittent ground fault.
Common fixes
- Repair circuit B insulation where the wire is shorted to ground.
- Clean or repair corroded or damaged circuit B connector terminals.
- Replace the circuit B actuator if its coil is internally shorted.
Can I keep driving?
Do not force the selector if it remains locked in Park. If it releases and the transmission shifts normally, limit driving and get the circuit checked soon; a worsening fault can leave the vehicle unable to select a gear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
