OBD-II fault code

P092B: Gear Shift Lock Solenoid/Actuator Control Circuit B Range/Performance

What it means

The gear shift lock solenoid/actuator control circuit B reports a control circuit b range/performance condition. Selector lever interlock cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Circuit B controls a gear-shift lock actuator that helps keep the selector in Park until release conditions are met. P092B means the module sees an abnormal circuit B response, such as a slow actuator or a signal outside its expected range, rather than a clear open circuit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator response slow
  2. High-resistance contact
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan for related transmission or interlock codes to see when the circuit B performance fault occurred.
  2. Operate the brake and selector and note whether release from Park is slow, inconsistent, or absent.
  3. Inspect circuit B wiring and connectors at the actuator for corrosion, loose terminals, damage, or high-resistance contacts.
  4. Use a scan tool to command circuit B, if supported, and compare the command with available actuator feedback.
  5. Test circuit B wiring and the actuator response for excessive resistance or delay against the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If the harness tests correctly, assess the circuit B actuator or sensor element for a response outside its calibration range.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a loose or corroded circuit B connector.
  • Repair high-resistance or damaged circuit B wiring.
  • Replace the slow or out-of-range circuit B actuator or sensor element.

Can I keep driving?

If the selector releases and the vehicle shifts normally, limit driving to necessary trips and arrange diagnosis soon. Stop driving if shifting becomes harsh, delayed, or slipping, or if the selector cannot be secured in the selected gear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
