OBD-II fault code

P0911: Gate Select Actuator Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The gate select actuator circuit reports a range/performance fault. Gate selection actuation is impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The gate select actuator moves the transmission mechanism between shift gates, and the TCM monitors whether its electrical response and position feedback stay within the expected operating range. This code sets when gate selection is too slow or otherwise outside calibrated performance, which can involve a high-resistance connection, a weak actuator, or aged position sensing.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator response slower than calibrated
  2. High-resistance contact
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded with actual gate position in live data to identify when movement becomes slow or inaccurate.
  2. Inspect the gate select actuator connector and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, damage, or other sources of resistance.
  3. Check the actuator circuit under the manufacturer's specified conditions and compare voltage drop or signal readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Use the manufacturer's scan-tool procedure to command movement between gates and observe response time and position feedback.
  5. If the circuit is sound, test the actuator and position sensor across their operating range to find a slow actuator or feedback outside calibration.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose actuator connections.
  • Repair wiring or terminals that cause excessive resistance.
  • Correct a binding gate mechanism if found during commanded movement.
  • Replace the gate select actuator if it moves too slowly with a sound circuit.
  • Replace or realign the position sensor if its feedback is outside the calibrated range.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if shifts are delayed or the transmission may lock into one gear; stop if gate selection becomes unpredictable. Continued operation can worsen actuator wear or leave the vehicle unable to select the gear needed for traffic.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
